Therefore CHECK handbrake and test that you have (resistance) pressure on the footbrake (If it goes straight to the floor it’s time to get out!!)

  1. CHECK that the Gear Lever is in neutral
  2. Hands on the Wheel; is the seat providing a comfortable driving position, for steering, for reaching the pedals and for adequate vision? (If not fatigue may set in and reduce concentration.)
  3. CHECK; Doors closed; Windscreen and rear window is clear and clean (NO obstructions nor Danglers)
  4. CHECK; All mirrors – and correctly angle – and clean
  5. CHECK position of Controls and auxiliaries
  6. Belt up – adjust as necessary – keeping buckles low and to side of body – (ensure Passengers do likewise!!)
  7. Turn ignition key to illuminate dashboard; CHECK; Battery discharge and oil pressure warning lights; CHECK for Adequate petrol
  8. CHECK that Direction indicator warning lights operate, (if one is too rapid – this indicates Bulb Failure)
    NB Make sure you do not confuse other drivers.
  9. Depress Clutch (to disengage the gear box and reduce strain on the Battery – particularly when the engine is cold and the oil is thick
  10. Start engine , note relevant warning lights go out
    Test the brakes as soon as you move off.
