Carry out this check every time you get into a vehicle. Make sure you are familiar with the position and operation of the controls, auxiliary controls and instruments before setting off.

Handbrake on, gear in neutral.

Identify type of engine, (petrol, diesel or LPG)
Identify type of drive, (front, rear or four wheel.)
Identify type of gearbox, (automatic or manual.)
Identify additional driving aids, (ABS, traction control, adaptive suspension.)

Adjust seat (position, rake and height if adjustable) to give good all round vision and good access to the controls.

Handbrake and footbrake respond firmly.

Number and position of gears including reverse.

Position of controls and auxiliaries.

Doors are securely closed.

Switch on ignition, note warning lights; set manual choke if necessary and start engine. Continue with these checks: -

After system becomes operational check the instruments; if any of the earlier checks could not be completed before ignition or start up, do them now.

Carry out stationary brake test to ensure the system is working.

Adjust mirrors, inside and out to give best view.

Make sure all auxiliaries are working.

Check gauges and warning lights.

Check seatbelts – not frayed or twisted, locks when tugged, releases on depressing the button, properly adjusted – then fit it.

Check in mirrors, select gear, check over shoulder, release handbrake (in automatics keep footbrake depressed before engaging DRIVE), move off when safe.
