Membership
All new members who have not already passed the Advanced Driving Test join the group as Associate Members through the IAM "Skill for Life" Scheme. They are entitled to attend all Group meetings and social functions and receive the group newsletter. Take a look at our Newsletter and Programme of Events to get an idea of some of the things we get up to. The cost is £99 (£79 if under 26 years of age) which can be paid by credit card or cheque, and includes the following:-

  • Guidance Book - "How to be an Advanced Driver"
  • IAM Test and First Year Membership Fee
  • Swindon Group Associate One Year Membership Fee
  • Click here to link to the IAM page which allows you to sign up online

Most associates wish to progress to full membership of the Group and the Institute and are allocated an observer who will help them develop their skills. This assistance will be provided at no extra cost, but you must provide your own vehicle and will also be asked to produce your driving licence, certificate of insurance and where applicable a current MOT certificate at the time of the first observed run - and at the test when this is taken. Once you have been allocated an observer you will be expected to finish your programme of observed runs as the assistance is given in the observer's own time. All members, whether associate or full, are also expected to maintain the highest possible driving standards.

What are the On-Going Costs?

Current Membership Fees
Existing Associates (Renewals)   £29.00/Year
Full   £10.00/Year
IAM   £17.50/Year (Direct Debit)
  £18.00/Year (Non Direct Debit)

Gift Aid

The Swindon and District Group of Advanced Motorists is registered as a charity and, as such, may recover the basic rate income tax paid on your membership subscription from HM Revenue & Customs. This represents an additional income to the Group of £2.80 per member. Members who pay tax at the highest rate may also claim the tax on the difference between the higher and lower rates through their tax return.

All that is needed is for you to complete a declaration which gives your permission to reclaim the tax. Please note however that you must have paid an equivalent amount of tax in the same tax year. A declaration form is available here. Would you please complete it and return it to swindongroup@hotmail.com.

Even better news is that the Group can claim back payments for previous years. If you do not indicate to the contrary we will assume that the permission to reclaim tax starts from membership year 2006/7. The Group has not retained sufficient payment records to be able to support a claim for earlier years.

So, please help the Group by completing a declaration.

Other Benefits

Summer 2007Most people find that they become safer, more confident drivers and therefore enjoy their driving more. Once they pass the Advanced Driving Test full members get the chance to participate fully in group activities and also receive "Advanced Driving" - The IAM Magazine. The group has also negotiated some special discounts for both full and associate members with local suppliers of motoring and other goods and services.
